Some enthusiasts liken the Choo Choo El Camino to other conversion vehicles manufactured by companies such as Mark III or Southern Comfort, but in actuality the Choo Choo converted El Camino was more similar to the SLP Camaro SS and Trans Am WS6 of the. If you find either the relay or the transistor connectors are burned-melted this is an indication the blower motor is drawing excessive current. Choo Choo Customs first started converting El Caminos into Designer Series SS models in 1983. too, as they are prone to melting/corroding due to high resistance caused by a worn, defective fan motor. They are very reasonably priced and you should also replace the connector and pigtail assy. (Possible defective Fusible Link or bad wire?) Most likely it sounds like a bad High Fan Relay. If you don’t have current at the Red wire you have an open circuit from this red wire source to the relay. You should also have 12 + Volts at the High Fan Relay RED wire all the time. If you don’t have current at the Orange wire at the relay when blower switch is in the High mode, you either have a defective blower switch inside the vehicle or bad circuit (broken wire-bad connection) from the switch to the high fan relay.ģ. (This should all be checked with the key switch turned on)Ģ. If not, you should REPLACE THE HIGH FAN RELAY. If you have current at the RED wire at the relay, you should also have 12 Volts at the Purple wire at the Relay. This Orange wire powers the relay coil which closes and supplies 12 + volts directly to the fan motor and totally by-passes ALL the transistors when the fan switch is in High Mode. (unaudited figures): 1983 - 587, 1984 - 1309, 1985 - 1198, 1986 - 995, 1987 - 861 (total of 4950) So, if you bought the '87 and it's a true Choo Choo, then you'd own one of 861 special 1987 El Caminos and one of only 4,950 ever produced. When your blower fan switch is in the High position you should have current (12+ Volts) at the Orange wire where it connects to the High Fan Relay: This is a Five (5) contact relay behind the AC accumulator/dryer.
